Internet freedom is the concept that all individuals have the natural right to freely express themselves on the Word Wide Web without fearing censorship or punishment from corporations or governments. The idea is based on the principle of free speech by recognizing the cyber world as a mirror image of the physical. Therefore, whatever people’s actions and behavior online are not immune from consequences just as they are not in tangible reality.
Further, censorship or restrictions (e.g. pornography) imposed by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) or government regulations are seen as infringements on the Internet domain of speech. Thus, social media and search engine giants who employ algorithms that bias certain forms of expression online—though not actual violations of free speech due to the absence of state law—are frowned upon by advocates of Internet freedom.
